Lock-in time adjustment

Attention Show Choir: I have to adjust the times for the singer/dancer/combo members during the lock-in because Andrea has been called in during the afternoon by the Army.  We will do Saturday noon-3:30 (choreo review, vocal rehearsal, band with vocals), then you will be dismissed to get what you need for the potluck & lock-in from 3:30- 5pm.  We will have our potluck at 5pm (instead of 7pm as originally planned).  Andrea will have a long choreo session to start the lock-in from 6-midnight.  The rest of our schedule from midnight until Sunday morning at dismissal will stay the same.

Don't forget your pictures tomorrow Show Choir.

Tree Lighting

Great job tonight at the Tree Lighting everyone!  Watching the Harrison High School Bands  in the parade, singing a few preview songs from our JS & HS choir concerts next week, visiting a few downtown shops and then grabbing a late coffee at The Coffee Peddlar was perfect.  Thanks City of Harrison!

December Events

We have many exciting things happening in December.   Please see the Performance Alert that will be given to all students on either Monday or Tuesday (December 1st or 2nd) for specific details.

Thursday and Friday December 4th & 5th are auditions for the new Junior School Show Choir (only 7th & 8th graders only) after school.  Sign-up for a tryout time by the Junior School office door.

Friday, December 5th is the Show Choir mixer at Hamilton high school with members of Fairfield, Edgewood, Ross, Hamilton and Harrison show choirs in attendance between 7-10pm.  Mrs. Purdy will be a chaperone.  All attendees must arrange their own transportation.  This is just a fun event, not a performance.

Saturday, December 6th is our annual performance at the Harrison City Tree Lighting at the firehouse in downtown Harrison.  All 7th -12th grade choir members have this as a required/graded performance and 6th graders may participate for 12 IWAA points.  We sing after the parade.  Please see the Performance Alert for specific details.

HS Show Choir students also have a choreography session on Saturday, December 6th from 9am- 1pm in the commons.

Monday, December 8th is the High School Show Choir composite picture day.  Sign-up for a time to have your picture taken in the media center.

Wednesday, December 10th is the Junior School Holiday Concert in the Martin Marietta Theater at the Activity Center.  This is a graded performance for all 6th, 7th and 8th grade choir students.  Doors open at 6:30pm and the curtain opens at 7:00pm.  Please see this week's Performance Alert for all details.

Thursday, December 11th is the High School Holiday Concert in the Martin Marietta Theater at the Activity Center.  This is a graded performance for all high school choir students.  Doors open around 6:30pm (or as soon as we complete our Yearbook pictures) and the curtain opens at 7:00pm.  Please see this week's Performance Alert for all details.

Saturday, December 13th is the High School Show Choir Lock-in and Tuesday, December 16th we sing at Wesbanco at 3pm.

IWAA opportunity

Choirs: here is a great IWAA service opportunity.  Sign up and help with Empty Bowls Charity Event at the Activity Center on Saturday, November 15th.  Remember that Junior High students will need parent permission and supervision to help. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f48acaf22a4fc1-empty   More IWAA opportunities to follow later this semester- but this one is a great cause.

Fundraiser here on Friday

The music fundraiser products will be here on Friday afternoon.  Remember that many of these items are refrigerated so they need to be picked up either by students (JS: in the JS band room on their way to the bus after school; HS: in the Rock Lab on their way to the parking lot) or by parents (before  4pm).

October is heating up!

Thanks for everyone who helped with the spaghetti dinner on Saturday.  The music boosters are having a bake sale after school on Monday.  Students that help with the bake sale will be allowed to put the proceeds toward their costume or trip funds.  Please see Mrs. Purdy or Mr. Egan during lunch to volunteer for this opportunity.

Our NYC signup deadline is Wednesday and orders for the cookie/cheese fundraiser are also due that day.  The last volunteer opportunity (for IWAA points) for first quarter is the band competition this Saturday, October 11th.  Shift times are 9am- 2pm or 4pm-10pm (you are also permitted to work a double shift for two quarters worth of IWAA points).  Sign up with Mrs. Purdy.

Our Fall concert is Tuesday, October 14th.  Student singers must arrive by 6:45pm.  The doors open at 6:30pm and curtain is at 7pm.  Students should wear their informal choir uniform (because our formal uniforms won't be in yet).  Admission to all of our quarterly concerts are FREE and we encourage all friends, family and community members to come and enjoy the show.  We still need a few parent volunteers to sell music booster raffle tickets at the door and Harrison Voices car stickers.

The Show Choir dance workshop has been moved to Sunday, October 19th and the NEW time is 5:30pm-9:30pm (because our choreographer has been called to fulfill her obligation to the Army that weekend and she won't be back in Harrison until after 5).  The MANDATORY parent meeting for Double H Showcase is Thursday, October 23rd at 7pm in the Activity Center Auditorium.  Each Show Choir student needs to have at least one of their two required adult Double H volunteers at this meeting.

Parky's Farm is Saturday, October 25th.  The sign-up for this trip fund event will be out this week.

We Need Helpers

We still need helpers for this Saturday's spaghetti dinner at the Jr. School.  Please let me know if you can work a 10-2pm shift or a 2-5:30pm shift to help out.  Volunteers earn IWAA points as well as service points.  The deadline to register for the NYC trip is at the end of this week. Show Choir has an optional review/help session after school on Wednesday.

Service Opportunity

We need helpers on Saturday, October 4th serving the spaghetti dinner at the Junior School.  Message me to grab a 10am-2pm shift or a 2pm-5:30pm shift or you can sign up during school.  This music booster service opportunity can cover your IWAA requirement for the entire quarter.
We also need another student selling raffle tickets at Friday night's game.

Tuesday, September 23rd is Music Night at Chipotle

Come out to Harrison's Chipotle tomorrow with this coupon and our music students receive a nice donation from Chipotle!  Remember to print the coupon or our kids don't get credit.

Ford Drive 4 your School Event

Don't forget the Ford Drive 4 your School event on Saturday, April 19th. If you are 18 or over, bring your license and drive a new Ford vehicle. If you are under 18, please encourage a parent, neighbor or older relative to go and drive a car or truck. Ford will donate $20 to our Music Boosters for every test drive taken on Saturday between 9am and 4pm at the High School Activity Center.
If you are a choir student in Junior School or High School you can earn IWAA service points for helping our boosters with this event. Just write a note saying you worked a shift at Ford (put it in your pocket), go to the Activity Center in your Harrison Voices or other Harrison gear, find a music booster parent and ask to help. They will assign you to work concessions or the car wash (wherever they need the assistance). After you work a 3 or 4 hour shift, THANK your music booster supervisor and then ask either Mr. Downey, Ms. Hacker or Mr/Mrs Pack to sign your note (because I will recognize their signatures). Then on Monday, show me the signed note so that I can put your service points in the grade book. We only have two big service events in the Spring so I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity.

Need Helpers

The Double H Showcase is a show choir competition hosted by our school on Saturday, February 22nd, 2014.  We are in need of many student and adult helpers including homeroom monitors for the event.

Since many of our parents are working concessions, ticket taking & other shifts we are in danger of not have enough room monitors for the entire day.

Please recruit people and sign-up for a shift if you can help.  Homeroom monitors only need to be adults--over 21--and able to sit in a room for four hours, and be responsible for watching the room.  That is all it takes.  If you are under 21 and would like to help you may contact Bryant Downey at badowney@gmail.com to volunteer for a concession shift.

The site to sign up for any other helper (like homeroom monitor, parking, security, etc) is www.signupgenius.com and search for "double.h.showcase@gmail.com

Thanks for all you do--and are going to do for our students in the choral music department.

Solo & Ensemble Canceled

Due to the weather, the Solo & Ensemble event for tomorrow has been canceled.  I enjoyed listening to everyone in class perform today.

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Saturday at Elder

Saturday is the OMEA Solo & Ensemble contest.  Many students have prepared solos for the contest and we have registered four large ensembles.  If you are preparing for Saturday's competition I encourage you to practice on your own during this time away from school.  If you are in Show Choir and do not have another solo or ensemble performance scheduled for Saturday you will now be free on Saturday.  Due to the time we needed during the last few weeks to prepare for Portsmouth and the lost days this week, Show Choir has not had time to properly prepare the Classical piece for OMEA Solo & Ensemble competition.  I am withdrawing that chamber ensemble along with Madrigal from the Elder contest.  Please email or text me with any questions.

Helping Hands

Mrs. Vidal and a couple of parents are helping stitch some velcro into our guys vests tomorrow afternoon. The velcro makes it easier for our guys to make the costume change. If anyone can stop by the Activity Center between 3-6:30 pm to help - we would love every extra set of hands.

Portsmouth Competition

Show Choir is at the Tri-State Show Choir Invitational at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio this Saturday, hosted by Portsmouth High School.  I have not been informed about the cost of ticket prices for spectators.
Call time is 8:45am for all show choir students.  Gentlemen should have their white shirts washed and pressed on Thursday evening so we can practice once more Friday in class and have everything ready to leave on Saturday morning.  This is our first time loading costumes, instruments and sets onto the music booster trailer so everyone will need to be ready to pitch in.
Please wear comfortable clothes and your show choir t-shirt for arrival. (We should get there @ 12:30).  Standard competition rules apply about not bringing in outside food.
Our performance time is 2:30pm and awards are @6:15pm.
Good Luck!!

Edgewood this weekend

Saturday call time for Edgewood is 7:45am on the bus garage side of the Activity Center.  There is a big wrestling tournament there so we won't be permitted to go into the activity center, access the black wardrobes or get anything on stage.  Make sure that you have everything you need from the stage at the end of our class tomorrow morning (we just found out that they start the tournament before school ends on Friday afternoon).  We also have a rehearsal on Friday afternoon - I am still trying to find a danceable space for that rehearsal.
The bus should leave @ 8am and we start the workshop at Edgewood at 9am.  We will rotate through vocals, choreo. clinic & team building activities all day with a lunch break (they sell concessions).  Then we will have an afternoon rehearsal with most of our band members before dinner (once again from their concessions- so be prepared).
After dinner break we will have time to change into the purple/blue outfits.  Make sure that you bring everything you need for that uniform (use the garment bag and show choir duffle bags that the music boosters have provided)  If you don't have your bag(s) yet, stop into my office on Friday.
We perform at 7:45 pm.  I can still sell pre-sale tickets to your guests through Friday.  Then we will watch Northwest and Edgewood perform before we leave @9:15 pm.  We should be home by 10 pm (as far as competitions go, not too late).
Good Luck!  Remember to cultivate your/our reputation using the tools we discussed today in class.

Edgewood tickets

The Edgewood people gave me pre-sale tickets for Saturday's show.  They are $7 for adults, $5 for students/seniors.  The tickets are numbered and will guarantee you a specific seat (i.e. row 6 vs row 16).  I can sell the tickets until we load the bus Saturday morning at 8 am.  If you would like a ticket after that, you'll need to buy them at the door.

Solo and Ensemble Rehearsals

High School Solo and Ensemble Contest at Elder is in three weeks.  I will be available during lunch and after school all this week to help our students prepare.  You can send me an e-mail or message on Facebook to reserve your time in my rehearsal schedule.  You can also sign up for a spot in person tomorrow at school.

Lock-in wrap up

Great Job at yesterday's Show Choir lock-in!  I hope that everyone had fun.  I know that there was a considerable difference between our 5:30pm run of the show and our 6:15am run.  Our hard work is paying off.  You will get more details about Saturday's visit to Edgewood at school tomorrow.  Don't forget your music so we can finish those last few pages of Somewhere Over the Rainbow and start our Solo & Ensemble contest music.
